Back

Temple for religious worship

Located in Rocafuerte and Sucre streets, San Agustín Church was built between 1876 and 1880 using elegant adobe bricks. The walls are 1.30 m thick and the building is covered with ancient slate. The only nave has several masterpieces made before Ibarra’s earthquake, and some images of the Quiteña Art School. The south and western facades have a Spanish classical style, and a small and beautiful square containing a statue of Abdón Calderón, commissioned by Ibarra’s municipal government. Calderón was a legendary hero of the Battle of Pichincha, that concluded the struggle for Ecuadorian Independence.
