Historical monument
Every July 17th, Ibarra celebrates an aniversary of the battle of Ibarra. According the history in 1823 the Spanish forces under Colonel Agustin Agualongo, from Pasto were revolted and tried to march to Quito and passed through Ibarra sacking the city and, destroyed everything they could, outraged women and tried to settle down in Ibarra, until they were surprised by the army of Simón Bolívar, who upon learning of the mutiny, he faced with Agualongo in a bitter struggle that ended the triumph of our Ecuadorian troops. Legend says that they crossed the river and, from the huge rock Simon Bolívar directed his troops to victory over the royalists, nicknamed «novices».
Nowadays La Piedra Chapetona is considered a historic place, it is located on the banks of Tahuando River, where a few years ago there was the staging of such battle, thanks to the collaboration of Yaguachi Cavalry Group of Ibarra. Which were suspended because the detonations were dangerous to the location of several houses built on the banks of river Tahuando.
