First inmigrants Africans in Chota Valley
The first inhabitants of the Chota Valley arrived from Africa in the 17th century. They were brought by the religious community of the Jesuit Fathers to work as slaves in the sugar cane plantations and salt mines.
Enriqueta Méndez, 78 years old, shares the history of the place with all visitors. She describes it as a magical land, full of history, music, dance, gastronomy and nature.
The locals maintain their ancestral customs. Most of them are dedicated to the cultivation of beans, sugar cane, chili, lemon, yellow ovo and the endemic prickly pear of there.
A river crosses this tropical site, which the inhabitants know how to take advantage of in many ways, whether for bathing, washing clothes or cleaning their kitchen utensils.
